Manzanita Cabins
Dear friends and repeat clients approached us with their plans to develop a heavily wooded lot on the Pacific coast into a pair of cabins, one for them and one as a short term rental.
The site has an “enchanted grove” quality, and while hidden behind the dune, the ocean is felt through all the other senses. The elemental, almost primitive quality of the structure’s volumes came from an admiring study of Obie Bowman’s Walk-in Cabins and other Sea Ranch precedents. We’ve also worked on simplifying building systems and details, knowing that the owners plan on building themselves.
Each cabin faces toward the forest and ferns with a double height great room, a sleeping loft and a separate bedroom within roughly 600 square feet. Naturally weathering wood shingle siding, abundant site glazed windows, and generous decks nosing into native woodland form the exterior palette, while wood paneling, built-in couches and quarry tile floors create warm, inviting and durable interior spaces.
Site work is anticipated in the Spring of 2024
