NW Forest FARMHouse

We began site planning this residential complex by putting our boots on, looking for the spot with the best balance of solar exposure, privacy and an intimate relationship to topography.

The approach to the house lies along a winding path - through dense wooded screens and behind a tractor barn - thresholds that heighten the drama of arrival.

The house uses a restrained palette of materials chosen to age gracefully: a local basalt for the base and chimneys, thermally treated ash for the garage and barn, and copper accents. Massing was inspired by precedents both in New England and the Pacific Northwest, so that the large house and its outbuildings integrate into the site in a way that feels organic and developed over time.

Close collaboration with Jessica Helgerson Interior Design, SHWA Landscape Architects and Otis Construction allowed the team to achieve a very high level of resolution and finish.
